The area of Costa Calma in the south of Fuerteventura has been popular with German holidaymakers for some time. The first hotel appeared in 1977, but the resort did not really become established until 1984 following the opening of the main road. The road heading in to Costa Calma is lined by tall palms and pine trees, giving the area a very lush feel in comparison to the stark barren north. There are a great many hotels now in Costa Calma to cater to the tourist industry, over 8,000 beds in all, and accompanying these are a vast array of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes.
The area is predominately famous for the 20m stretch of golden sands which run down to the typically Spanish village of Morro Jable in the very south
of the island.
