At the north west end of Fuerteventura lies El Cotillo, a tranquil fishing village with spectacular coastlines, warm lagoons, and private coves. Here towards the lighthouse, there are designated sanctuaries for a variety of wildlife, some of which are only indigenous to this area. Hence every effort is made to keep these beaches as clean as possible. El Cotillo is renown for it’s marvellous Key West style sunsets, which can be seen best from one of the lovely restaurants occupying the old harbour area. On the edge of the new harbour you will find the Fortaleza del Tostón, a n 18th century stronghold, which now houses a number of exhibitions during the year. Camping at El Cotillo is popular during the summer months and the lagoons provide warm safe waters in which to swim. Under currents can be strong on this coastline though and care should be exercised at all times, especially with children. Surfers are more attracted to the crashing waves on the Playa de Costillo, to the left of the village, however novices to this sport might find these waters too testing. The lighthouse at the far end of the coastline is a constant warning to seafarers of the treacherous rocks lying below the surface of the alluring waters and the strong currents that can drag a boat off course. Music festivals are frequently held in El Cotillo and attract musicians from all over the world and from different persuasions. The new 5 star hotel under construction in El Cotillo is sure to bring greater numbers of tourists to the area, and demand for property is high.
