Since 1835, Puerto del Rosario has been hailed as the capital of Fuerteventura and was once renown for the exportation of tomatoes and the local Majarero cheese, which is still produced in the traditional Canarian way. Puerto del Rosario portrays a typically town existence with the many businesses, shops, restaurants and bars all competing for the growing population of local Canarians, Spanish mainlanders and foreign residents who have chosen to settle here. During weekdays, between the hours of 8am and 2pm and 5pm and 9pm busy people can be seen bustling around operating businesses, shopping and delivering goods. During siesta and on Sunday’s the area becomes a great deal calmer, except after dark when the town explodes in to a carnival of lively bars and nightclubs. Puerto del Rosario is also the islands cultural hot-spot and many exhibitions and festivals can be seen at the Casa del la Cultura throughout the year.
A small museum, which was once the home of exiled Migule Unamuno, a Basque philosopher and writer who came to Fuerteventura in 1924 after opposing
the military dictator General Primo de Rivera, is the centre for a display of his work, which clearly defines his intense relationship with the
island.
