Canary Islands Information
The Canary Islands are a volcanic region of Spain located off the northwestern coast of Africa, some 1,500 kilometres south east of the
Spanish mainland. The Canary Islands have an ideal climate and constant temperature throughout the year. There are seven islands in the
Canaries and are divided into two provinces: Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which includes the
islands of Tenerife, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro: and Las Palmas, which includes the
islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and
Lanzarote. The seven main islands of the Canary Islands are well spaced out so that it is only a day's sail between most of them. The logical
route for most yachts arriving from the north is to visit Lanzarote maybe via Arrecife then on
to Fuerteventura. While in Fuertaventura,
Puerto del Rosario is an abvious port of call,
other areas such as Casillas del Angel,
Caleta de Fuste and most importantly
Corralejo as well as the small village of
Lajares and the tree lines Pajara,
El Cotillo and the beautiful
Costa Calma . Next, Gran Canaria, the
largest island of the Archepelago then Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and finally La Palma. The Canaries remain the logical jumping-off point
for yachts crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean, ever since Columbus started the fashion just over 500 years ago, and from November to
January the islands are full of yachts preparing for their Atlantic crossing.
