Tarifa is located in Andalucia at the Southern tip of Spain where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic meet. The African continent lies only 14 kilometers away and can be reached by ferry directly. The arabic influence reflects in the alleys and colorful flower-decorated courtyards. Mass tourism has never made it down here. The local inhabitants (14'000 people) support our Spanish language programs. Spanish is the only language to communicate with the locals because they do not speak any foreign languages. Tarifa is located between Barbate and Algeciras. This small town became popular because of the variety of outdoor sport activities it offers, especially windsurfing and kitesurfing. Tarifa guarantees you a balance of a study- and fun vacation. Tarifa's wild coastline attracts surfers and nature-lovers alike. Just as famous for its birdwatching as its surfing, there are endless opportunities to explore the rolling countryside. Horse-riding, hang-gliding, kite-surfing, rock-climbing and diving to name but a few. Just 11 km across the Straits of Gibraltar at its narrowest point, this southern-most tip of Europe where the Med meets the Atlantic Ocean, enjoys spectacular views of the Rif mountains of Africa across the water.
Costa de la Luz Information
The Costa de la Luz (Coast of light) is the western part of the Andalucía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic. The sand is finer and a more golden colour than the neighbouring Costa del Sol. The typical beaches here are more expansive and probably backed by sand dunes and pine trees. This part of the coast has not seen the high-rise hotel development of other areas. The temperatures are slightly milder and the often strong Atlantic winds and waves are favoured by wind surfers and surfboarders alike.
